One of the most important factors in forklift battery maintenance is when and how much water must be added. Too much water or any water added to a battery at a low state of charge could cause electrolyte overflow and acid corrosion leading to poor battery performance. Not adding enough water could cause a battery to go dry and ultimately ruin it altogether.
When lead-acid batteries are put on charge, they can and will release hydrogen gas. If not monitored and properly ventilated the percent of hydrogen can rise to a level where there is a high risk for combustion potentially resulting in a catastrophic explosion.
